Birds

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Birds is a simple app that helps you identify birds from photographs and keep a personal collection of the birds you've discovered.

We believe your collection should belong to you.

Bird photographs

When you take or select a photograph for identification, Birds securely sends the image to our backend hosted on Google Cloud. We use Google's Gemini AI through Vertex AI to identify the bird.

Images are processed to provide identification results. Birds does not offer cloud storage or synchronization for your personal bird collection.

We do not use your photographs to train our own AI models. Google's processing and any service-level retention are governed by its applicable Google Cloud terms.

Your bird collection

Your saved birds and their photographs are stored locally on your device.

Birds does not require an account. Your collection is not synchronized with our servers.

You can remove saved birds within the app. Removing the app also removes its local data, subject to any device backups.

Analytics

We use Firebase Analytics, a service provided by Google, to understand how Birds is used and improve the experience.

Analytics may collect information such as app interactions, identification successes and failures, device information, and app installation identifiers.

We do not use this information to identify you personally.

Security and technical information

We use Apple's App Attest to help verify legitimate app requests and protect our identification service from abuse.

Our cloud services may process technical information, including request timestamps, IP addresses, response statuses, and security verification data, to operate and protect Birds.

Third-party services

Birds uses the following services:

These services process data under their applicable privacy and security terms.

Data retention and deletion

Your personal bird collection remains on your device until you delete it.

Analytics, security information, and server logs are retained according to our configured service retention periods and applicable provider policies.

You can contact us to request information about, or deletion of, data we control. Because Birds does not use accounts, we may not always be able to associate technical records with an individual.

Your privacy

Birds does not require registration, sell your personal information, or display personalized advertisements.

You control which photographs you choose to submit for identification.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Birds evolves. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
